Discernment Dilemma: Trust Your Intuition or Trust Your Fear?

Learning to move forward with greater clarity, self-trust and awareness.

Have you ever had a feeling about someone or something, but found yourself questioning whether you were listening to your intuition or reacting from fear?

This was the focus of our latest Conscious Connections discussion, Discernment Dilemma: Trust Your Intuition or Trust Your Fear?

When we have experienced heartbreak, betrayal, emotional abuse or the breakdown of a long-term relationship, our past can influence how we approach new connections. Sometimes those experiences offer valuable wisdom. At other times, they can cause us to anticipate problems, question intentions or interpret situations through the lens of what happened before.

Learning to recognise the difference is an important part of moving forward.

The Feeling Is Information,
Not Necessarily the Conclusion

Throughout the evening, we explored how intuition and discernment work together. Your gut may be telling you that something deserves your attention, but that doesn't necessarily mean you already know the complete truth of the situation.

Discernment encourages us to pause and ask questions. What is actually happening? What facts do I have? Am I responding to something in the present or am I being reminded of an experience from the past?

These questions can help us honour our intuition without allowing fear to make every decision for us.

Trust, Boundaries and Communication

Our conversation included personal experiences involving broken trust, ignored red flags, emotional abuse and uncertainty in dating. We discussed the importance of recognising our boundaries, communicating our needs and paying attention to whether someone's actions align with their words.

We also explored how assumptions can develop when communication is unclear. Whether you're waiting for a response after a date, wondering about someone's intentions or deciding how much personal information to share, taking time to ask questions can help you make more informed decisions.

Healthy communication doesn't mean pointing fingers or expecting someone else to manage our emotions. It means being willing to express what we're experiencing, using ownership and clarity rather than blame.

You Don't Have to Rush the Process

One of the important reminders from the evening was that a first date doesn't have to become a commitment. It can simply be an opportunity to see how you feel around someone, learn more about them and decide whether you would like to continue getting to know each other.

You are allowed to take your time, ask questions and change your mind when you learn something new.

Moving forward after heartbreak isn't about ignoring your past or becoming suspicious of everyone you meet. It's about allowing your experiences to provide wisdom without letting them become your warning system for everything that comes next.

What Are You Listening To?

As you reflect on your own relationships and experiences, consider asking yourself:

Is this happening now, or did this happen to me before?

That one question can create space between your initial reaction and your next decision. It allows you to acknowledge your feelings while giving yourself the opportunity to explore what is actually true.

Discernment isn't about having every answer. It's about learning to trust yourself while remaining open, curious and grounded.
